Elected an alumni trustee in 2002, Walter (Sonny) Deriso is chair of the board of Atlantic Capital Bank and former vice chair of the board of Synovus Financial Corporation. After graduating from Emory College in 1968, he went on active duty in the Army Reserve, then entered law school, receiving his JD from Emory School of Law in 1972. He moved to Albany in 1972 to practice law and continued in his practice until January 1991, when he became president of Security Bank and Trust Company of Albany, a Synovus bank. In January 1997 he was named vice chair of the board of Synovus Financial Corporation and served until 2005.
While at Emory College, he was president of the Student Government Association and elected to Omicron Delta Kappa and DVS Honor Society. At graduation he received the Marion Luther Brittain Service Award.
Deriso's activities as an alumnus include serving on the Board of Visitors and being active in the Emory Alumni Association in both Albany and Columbus for many years. He is chair of the board of the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority, a member of the board of directors of Post Properties and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, past chair of the Georgia Bankers Association, and chair of the board of the Foundation of the South Georgia Methodist Home for Children and Youth.
